Every December, my marriage and family therapist friend, Carolyn, writes down a word or phrase she senses God is impressing on her for the New Year. Her word for 2012 was savor.
She’s thinking about pause for 2013.
It takes, she says, 20 seconds for something to attach to your brain. For instance. say you are viewing a magnificent sunrise. To appreciate the full impact of the scene and actually remember it in detail, you should pause and take it in for at least 20 seconds.
Imagine doing that for a full year. What wonderful things would be stored in your memory over 12 months?
Well, I’ve been thinking about my word/phrase for weeks now.
Let me pause (no pun intended) for a moment and say that my friend, Erin, posted this on Facebook last Friday:
I challenge you, friends, for the next few days, to ask and prayerfully meditate on what word the Lord would give you for 2013. I have done this for the past three years and God has been so faithful to give me that word and to diligently focus on that word throughout the year. He is steadily and faithfully transforming my heart and mind.
And then, this morning, Pastor Sam, to whom I have been married for a very long time, said this in the middle of his sermon:
Ask the Lord for a specific word for you for this coming year.
Sensing a theme, I decided to get this posted forthwith.
Over this past year, I would frequently hear myself saying, “Hey! We should get together sometime!” “Hey! We should meet for lunch!” “Hey! [too much Duck Dynasty] It would be fun for our family to go there!”
(Hey! Wordmistress alert!)
“Sometime” is a fantasy, friends. It is an ethereal thought whose time never comes.
Therefore, my word (it’s a phrase, actually) for 2013 is: Make it happen.
Make it happen.
If it’s going to happen, I am going to have to make it happen.
I’ve already been practicing. We were with a group of pastor friends recently after a funeral. As we were leaving, and “We should get together again sometime” echoed around the table, I pulled out my beautiful new IPhone 5 I got for my birthday with its cool new cover and said, “Let’s find a date.” Phones appeared all around, and Bam! it’s on the calendar. Right then. Right there.
The fact is, everyone is waiting for someone to make it happen. In 2013, amongst my family and friends – and people God brings into my life – that someone will be me.
What about you? What word or phrase would the Lord have you receive for the New Year?
What a fantastically personal God we serve.
I challenge you to take His word for you for 2013. And make it happen.
I’d love for you to share your word here, if you like. Leave a comment.
